Carrie Underwood Sings About 'Falling Apart' in New Single 'Cry Pretty'

Carrie Underwood is getting real.

The 35-year-old singer dropped her new single, “Cry Pretty,” on Wednesday, an emotional song in which she sings about “falling apart.” Underwood — who has been open about her struggles after a nasty fall at her home in November left her face and wrist injured — told fans in a blog post on Monday that the ballad reflects some of her personal experiences over the last year.

“You can pretty lie / And say it’s OK / You can pretty smile / And just walk away / Pretty much fake your way through anything / But, you can’t cry pretty,” she sings.

Underwood co-wrote “Cry Pretty” with Hillary Lindsey, Liz Rose and Lori McKenna of the Nashville songwriting team, the Love Junkies. The American Idol alum also co-produced her upcoming sixth studio album, telling fans about the “very fulfilling and empowering” experience.

“While I was writing last year, I met a writer/producer named David Garcia. We hit it off in a big way and I’m excited to say that we are co-producing my album together. I’ve always been lucky to have a voice in the writing and recording process, but this is the first time I am this involved in the production of my music,” Underwood continued.

“It’s been challenging and incredibly rewarding to be involved in every aspect from start to finish. David has been an amazing teacher and partner, and I’m so proud of what we have created,” she shared, adding that “Cry Pretty” is a “song I love so much.”

Underwood will hit the stage on Sunday for her first live performance since her accident at the 53rd Academy of Country Music Awards.
